Cultural Competency Training

Meeting the needs of patients from diverse backgrounds is an important part of providing quality eye care. The links below contain resources and guidelines on how to communicate clearly with patients of different cultures and ages.

If you see VSP Medicaid patients, you must take Cultural Competency training annually and submit your electronic attestation. Your training completion date will appear on the VSP Find a Doctor Directory.

  • California doctors:

    • If you are a doctor owner, please ensure that you, your employee doctors, and your staff have completed the below training modules before you complete your electronic attestation.

    • If you are an employee doctor, you must complete the below training modules and submit your own electronic attestation.

    • Staff must complete the below training modules.

  • All other doctors:

    • If you have taken Cultural Competency training elsewhere, skip to Step 2 and submit your electronic attestation. If you have not yet taken Cultural Competency training, you can take the VSP provided training listed below.

      • If you are a doctor owner or an employee doctor, you must complete the annual training and submit your own electronic attestation.

STEP 1: View Training

California providers must complete the following modules. All Medicaid providers in AZ, IL, MI, NC, NH, NV, NY, OH, OR, SC, UT, VA, WA, and WV can choose to complete the following modules or complete Cultural Competency training elsewhere, but must still submit your attestation of completion (see Step 2).

Module 1: Cultural Competency and Patient Engagement
Module 2: Better Communication, Better Care: Provider Tools to Care for Diverse Populations
Module 3: Seniors and Persons with Disabilities
Module 4: Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities and Languages
Module 5: Special Needs Plans Model of Care (SNP-MOC)

All California Medicaid Providers and Santa Clara County Advantage Providers must complete the following additional modules required by the California Department of Health Care Services:

Module 6: Critical Incident Training
Module 7: HICE General Compliance Medicare Parts C & D
Module 8: HICE FWA (Medicare Fraud Waste and Abuse)

  • Santa Clara County, California Advantage Providers

If you are an Advantage Provider in Santa Clara County, California, you must take this Cultural Competency training annually. Several VSP Vision Care clients in your area have the VSP Advantage plan and provide coverage to duals members (members who qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare). Though you are not on the Medicaid network, because your practice is able to see Medicare and Medicaid members as part of the Advantage network, you are required to take this annual Cultural Competency training as if you were a Medicaid provider.

STEP 2: Complete Attestation Form

All doctors must complete the attestation form confirming that you have taken the modules provided by VSP, or if you are outside of California, attest that you have completed Cultural Competency training elsewhere.
